A Parable Concerning Action

For a while there he had become so reasonable in his judgments that he hardly got anything done at all. Days passed with calm acceptance, and if things ever got really bad he would go so far as to say, ‘Forgive them, for they know not what they do.’

One day he paid a visit to a wise man, and when gaining entry to the wise man’s room he lamented, “It costs me much to be indifferent. How do you do it?”

The wise man raised his eyes slowly from his work, took one look at him, and said, “The difference between us is one of expectation: you still desire something; you are not fulfilled as you are currently living.”

He cried, “It is my wish to stand for something, in this life!”

The wise man replied, “There is madness in the words you speak. Do not take it for granted.”
