‘A meditation from October 13, 2019’
When meditating my mind’s calm water. Thoughts do not pass before me, but every so often I feel a ripple upon the water’s surface: a sensation of whatever it is that comes before thought. Thought? An erroneous, often extravagant account for the ripple, like: ‘It must be a boat.’
Many hours pass having not thought the boat, to account for the ripple—now it seems likely such explanation could never work. Instead there is a sense that whatever caused the ripple is more elemental, like the wind.
Where does the wind begin?
No answer, and my mind’s calm water.
